Taking a break……and some dolphins

Well, we took a well deserved break….. At the moment we are in Curacao, a nice little island in the caribbean. We have been here before and are staying now at Jan Thiel in Morena resort. Supposedly a eco and child friendly place but with both concepts they have some learning to do. Lots of birds around the house though and nice and private. Pool close by and the beach also just a stroll away.

So that is what we do, relax, sit a the pool, go to the beach and eat spare ribs……

Yesterday we were very active and went with the kids and my mum, who is with us here on the island, to Boca Tabla. The northern side of the island where the waves beat the coast in a nice display. The kids were not too much impressed but did enjoy driving the car…..

We had lunch at the (in)famous Jaanchi’s. You can still here the story of Mr Jaanchi about the chicken with little flight hours and the leguano stew for vitamin L of Love. But what was different was that the food arrived within 10 minutes! Food was nice and the kids got an icecream as a treat from Mr Jaanchi. After that we drove on the south side of the island. The rain lulled the kids to sleep and we decided to go to Santa Martha, Coral Cliff. But what a sad experience. It is still a magical spot but the hotel has gone bankrupt and it has been looted so the whole place is rather desolate. The beach is still there but it is disappearing. We had a good look around and collected some samples of cora (Niene did mostly)

Today we were supposed to have a dolphin encounter at 11. Well planned just before Caspian’s afternoon nap. But unfortunately after a lot of waiting we were told the dolphins would not be ready before 12.15. It was around 1 pm we were finally going in the water. It was really a lot of fun. Allowed to pet them give them a kiss and hug them. Both kids really liked it and it was worth the wait.

New windows just before the new year

The building has really begun. The men of Renster Venster have delivered all the new dubble glaze windows for the front, one for the back and two on the top floor. They work really quick and now (the 30th) almost all the work is done on the windows.

Andrew has demolished the old chimney so the stove can go under it and together with Pieter they also took out the old build in cubboard in the future guest room.

Today Folkert, Michiel, Pieter and Andrew are going to put the new electrical wiring in. The neighbours will be a bit happier with that because ofcourse it is not really quiet at a time between Christmas and New Year

We are still struggling with the design for the kitchen. We want it to be a central part of the house as it is always the place where people seem to gather. But as it is an old house we would also want it to fit the old place with the high ceilings etc.

A few more photos will be posted as we are already a bit further again….but somehow our hosting company does not like the new wordpress photo upload tool……..

Walls made out of straw and plaster..

Last weekend was not really a big success. We had a gastro virus running through the family and basically everywhere where Capsian went…… But we managed to get a lot of the old wall paper off and and very old windshield (glass) outside. I think it is time we start building.

We wanted to take out the fireplace and chimney where the new stove will be but it seems that this is the most solid wall of the whole building   :-)

The big crack in the wall has been filled

So after taking off all the black marble and having it stored in the cellar we decided that the contractor can cut of a piece of the chimney so the new stove can be placed under it.

The walls in the new bathroom seem to be the original walls (inner dividing walls) but these are actually made out of a very light frame of small pieces of wood and straw and plaster. So not really good material to put up the bathroom equipment. Luckily the contractor knows these type of old houses and he has a solution for it.

Sinterklaas 2011

I’m already 2 weeks behind in the renovation blog but I first have to write about our first Sinterklaas in Deventer.

It was a cold wet windy (is this a Winnie the Pooh start?) saturday morning. We thought that the arrival of Sinterklaas would be cancelled because of the weather but still went out to go to the place where the Zwarte Pieten (Black Pete) would host some games for the kids. A little boat telling us Sinterklaas is really coming.

Then we saw the Dutch flag flying from the big church, the sign that the Goedheiligman (Good saintly man, a nick name for Sinterklaas) would be arriving by steam boat on the river. All wrapped up we went to the river with two buggys. We were already cold and wet before we were there but there were boats on the river with lots of Zwarte Pieten and they were playing and having fun. A music boat So Niene decided she wanted to stay and wait for Sinterklaas. We tried to shield the little ones from the wind by standing in front of them but the wind was playing as well and would once in a while drop and than a few minutes later start again from a different direction.

Niene is waiting for Sinterklaas in the rain and wind....

After a while we were rewarded with the arrival of the big steamboat where Sinterklaas was standing on deck waving to everybody. Even he was wearing a sort of see through plastic rain shield .

Sinterklaas if finally arriving! We thought of going home after that but we spotted Americo. Americo is Sinterklaas’ horse and Niene had been asking and asking to pet Americo. She has seen Sinterklaas and Americo on television for weeks when she watched the Sinterklaas new bulletin (http://sinterklaasjournaal.ntr.nl/#/home).

So we did not go home but went to Americo and watched him for a while. In the meantime lots of Zwarte Pieten ran, walked and played around on the street.

Different Zwarte Pieten

They were also distributing lots of “strooigoed” ( a mix of lollies and little biscuits). They would put it in Niene’s jacket so it would not get wet and she could reach it and eat them…. Finally she was allowed to pet Americo and watch Sinterklaas as he got on the horse. After that a whole parade of a music band, Zwarte Pieten and Sinterklaas went through the city and we followed them for a while while they were on route to our place.

Sinterklaas in the rain

Later in the afternoon my brother and family arrived and on Sunday also my brother in law and my mum arrived and while we were just sitting in the lounge talking there was loud banging on the garage door downstair and the strooigoed flew throught he house.

Everyone went downstairs and Zwarte Piet had dropped so many gifts that it took all the adults and Neleke (my niece) to get all the parcels upstairs. After that the unwrapping of gifts and reading of poems started…….. It lasted the whole afternoon. Neleke en Niene helped Pieter (my brother) distribute the gifts and helped looking for parcels. For Andrew and Niene this was the first time to participate in what is called “pakjes avond” (Gift night) to celebrate Sinterklaas’s birthday. For me it had been a long time since I celebrated this in this way and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Summer in Deventer

A new start? Who knows. I have updated wordpress so am ready to go again.

We are at the end of our first summer in Deventer. Not that much summer I have to admit now…

But as you can see on this photo, we did have some nice days and enjoyed our new surroundings. We live very close to the city centre and this river beach on the other side of the river is about 30 minutes walk or a 15 minute walk and a ferry ride of a minute.

There is lots of stuff happening in Deventer and now Caspian is getting a little bigger we should be able to go away a bit more often for a whole day.

So who know new stories will come up here on this renewed blog more often…
