Update on GvB 55 11-12-2011

We are now three weeks into the renovation of the GvB 55. We had a bit of a break due to Sinterklaas but went full on the last week. Most of the breaking work has been done and upstairs there is now the biggest toilet space ever. Big toilet space

View from the toilet

The dividing walls of the back rooms and the big front room and back room have been gone. And the only working toilet is in this space. It is a very odd experience using the toilet up there.

Upstairs is one big room

Downstairs the old kitchen has been completely stripped also of the chimney. The old guest toilet has gone as well and we filled another container with rubble. The new bathroom

The sunroom has been stripped of its floor and has reveiled some rotten beams underneath and an outerwall that has completely detached itself from the main building. It will be some extra work to get this fixed. The contractors have dug an immense hole to have a look at the foundation of the sunroom. That is really interesting and I would like to have a look myself, who knows what we will find in artefacts….. The sunroom with no floor

A hole in the floor of the sunroom

The house is build on an old canal that has been filled up so there has to be lots of interesting stuff in the ground. But I must say that I will also be happy when the wall is fixed and the floor levelled.

The coming two weeks the contractors will be busy with just that. Also the big tear in the wall between us and the neighbour is going to be fixed now.

We are trying to decide on the kitchen. We have decided to put it in the old dining room and sunroom and have dining room in the old kitchen. Mostly because nowadays we mostly live in and around the kitchen it and the old dining room and sunroom are very nice spaces. There are a few option but all have their pros and cons so it is hard to decide what the best option is.

Sinterklaas 2011

I’m already 2 weeks behind in the renovation blog but I first have to write about our first Sinterklaas in Deventer.

It was a cold wet windy (is this a Winnie the Pooh start?) saturday morning. We thought that the arrival of Sinterklaas would be cancelled because of the weather but still went out to go to the place where the Zwarte Pieten (Black Pete) would host some games for the kids. A little boat telling us Sinterklaas is really coming.

Then we saw the Dutch flag flying from the big church, the sign that the Goedheiligman (Good saintly man, a nick name for Sinterklaas) would be arriving by steam boat on the river. All wrapped up we went to the river with two buggys. We were already cold and wet before we were there but there were boats on the river with lots of Zwarte Pieten and they were playing and having fun. A music boat So Niene decided she wanted to stay and wait for Sinterklaas. We tried to shield the little ones from the wind by standing in front of them but the wind was playing as well and would once in a while drop and than a few minutes later start again from a different direction.

Niene is waiting for Sinterklaas in the rain and wind....

After a while we were rewarded with the arrival of the big steamboat where Sinterklaas was standing on deck waving to everybody. Even he was wearing a sort of see through plastic rain shield .

Sinterklaas if finally arriving! We thought of going home after that but we spotted Americo. Americo is Sinterklaas’ horse and Niene had been asking and asking to pet Americo. She has seen Sinterklaas and Americo on television for weeks when she watched the Sinterklaas new bulletin (http://sinterklaasjournaal.ntr.nl/#/home).

So we did not go home but went to Americo and watched him for a while. In the meantime lots of Zwarte Pieten ran, walked and played around on the street.

Different Zwarte Pieten

They were also distributing lots of “strooigoed” ( a mix of lollies and little biscuits). They would put it in Niene’s jacket so it would not get wet and she could reach it and eat them…. Finally she was allowed to pet Americo and watch Sinterklaas as he got on the horse. After that a whole parade of a music band, Zwarte Pieten and Sinterklaas went through the city and we followed them for a while while they were on route to our place.

Sinterklaas in the rain

Later in the afternoon my brother and family arrived and on Sunday also my brother in law and my mum arrived and while we were just sitting in the lounge talking there was loud banging on the garage door downstair and the strooigoed flew throught he house.

Everyone went downstairs and Zwarte Piet had dropped so many gifts that it took all the adults and Neleke (my niece) to get all the parcels upstairs. After that the unwrapping of gifts and reading of poems started…….. It lasted the whole afternoon. Neleke en Niene helped Pieter (my brother) distribute the gifts and helped looking for parcels. For Andrew and Niene this was the first time to participate in what is called “pakjes avond” (Gift night) to celebrate Sinterklaas’s birthday. For me it had been a long time since I celebrated this in this way and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The breaking has started

After friday, where Andries took out the kitchen so the builders could place the supports for the wall that was to be demolished, our friends came on Saturday to break down the wall and break some other things. The aim was to fill up the container.

That has happened. When I arrived there to bring lunch, it was a very noisy house I came to. It was also very dusty and it was hard to recognize everyone. Michiel and Andries busy with the kitchen wall Michiel and Andries were busy trying to drill through the old kitchen wall. Erica, Guido and Pieter were attacking the floor in the lounge. Onno and Ties were busy dismantling the old bathroom upstairs.

  Onno demolished the bathroom......

Tom came as well to give a hand with the floor

Pieter, Guido and Tom busy with the wooden floor..

Erica tackling the floor..

 The wall is out....

There is a hole in the wall!

The day was a success and we are very grateful for all the help we had.

This weekend we will have a break as Sinterklaas is arriving……..

Graaf van Burenstraat 55… a start

Well, it is done. We bought the house and have the keys in our possesion. The deed was sealed with a lovely champagne brought by the previous owners’ family.

The house is in Graaf van Burenstraat in Deventer. A lovely old street hugging the river IJssel and the old city centre. The house itself is build in 1887 and does need a bit of attention.

We have big plans for the renovation and have started with friends yesterday to make these reality.

But first some pictures of the house as it was a few days ago.

One of the old fireplaces with marble around it. The tiles aren’t tiles…..they are stickers…

The room as it was before we moved in. The ceilings are really amazing.

This is the back of the house. It has a lovely deep garden facing South East (for the northern hemisphere that is just perfect.).

Well these are only just a few photos. The next blog post will start with the renovation as we started already last weekend with the breaking…… Pictures to follow

Summer in Deventer

A new start? Who knows. I have updated wordpress so am ready to go again.

We are at the end of our first summer in Deventer. Not that much summer I have to admit now…

But as you can see on this photo, we did have some nice days and enjoyed our new surroundings. We live very close to the city centre and this river beach on the other side of the river is about 30 minutes walk or a 15 minute walk and a ferry ride of a minute.

There is lots of stuff happening in Deventer and now Caspian is getting a little bigger we should be able to go away a bit more often for a whole day.

So who know new stories will come up here on this renewed blog more often…
